How do movie directors get to do what they do?
Q. How do they become directors? Do they start as actors and work their way up? Do they usually own the company that makes the movie?

A. Get as much experience as possible with all aspects of film, including cinematography, lighting, acting, and editing. Start working on small film projects such as music videos or commercials. Apply for an internship as a PA to get hands-on experience in the film industry. If you're the writer of a screenplay, try convincing the producer to let you direct it.

Do persons on a board of directors for a company get a salary for serving?
Q. I know that there are a couple or so persons that work in the company, so yes they would be paid but what about those that do not work at the company but are just part of the board of directors.Thanks all.

A. THEY DON'T get a salary- generally, they do get travel expenses and a nominal stipend per meeting. The BoD are an oversight board and woudl be conflicted if they were being paid a "salary".

How do people start non profit corporations as members of the board of directors and end up making all the $?
Q. I have always wondered how people who claim to be "non profit" say they are just that, yet on the side they say they're the "owner", and they make all the money off the so called non profit. When you incorporate as part of the member of the board of directors, aren't you forbidden from being compensated for being on the board? How does all that work?

A. The board should not be making money from the organization. One's time for serving on the board should not be in return for pay -- in fact, most board members provide some of the funding for an organization. Whether it's against the law or not, it's the industry standard that nonprofit board members are NOT paid, and your email is a perfect illustration of why paying board members at nonprofit organizations is a very bad idea, from a PR standpoint. However, I take issue with the other poster who said that her Executive Director makes more than 100K a year and that she thinks that's unreasonable.
