How Can A 16 Year Old Get Involved In Directing Theatre?
Q. I'm 16 years old and have a great interest in directing for theatre. Our school already has a director (the head of our theatre) and many teachers who are assistant directors. I currently act and do stage crew in our plays and musicals to get some experience to put on my college resume and learn more about the production of theatre, but is this enough? I'd like to get involved in directing now, but I feel this is probably all I can do until I'm older. I don't want to be lacking in experience, though.

A. You're a bit young for directing. However, there are some things you can do to get the next best thing. Ask your school's director, or a director from a community theatre if you can be an assistant. Tell them you are interested in directing one day, and would like to learn more about it. If this doesn'tt work, try being a Stage Manager for your school's show, or at a community theatre. The stage manager works directly under the director, and is the highest authority during performances. Its a lot of work, but its worth it. Good luck in all your theatreendeavorss!
